June 2010 - OSPTA Announces New
SENIOR FALL PREVENTION PROGRAM

Don’t let injuries resulting from a fall keep you or a loved one from enjoying life.

Injuries sustained in a fall can range from trivial bruises to life-threatening trauma.  A variety of risk factors,      including impaired mobility and balance, age related decrease in strength and endurance, household mobility hazards, unsafe footwear or walking aids, medication interactions, and visual impairments can literally bring you to your knees.

Now is the time to take action — prevent falls before they happen!

Orthopedic & Sports Physical Therapy’s Fall Prevention Program can help you or a loved one avoid a long, painful rehabilitation process or even surgery resulting from a fall.

During the initial evaluation and treatment appointment, a Physical Therapist diagnoses the patient’s individual fall risk factors using the Tinetti Balance & Gait Scale, Berg Balance Scale and Timed Up & Go Scale assessments.

Using these results, the Physical Therapist develops an individual plan of care with the goals of:

  • Increasing a patient’s strength and flexibility
  • Improving a patient’s balance
  • Increasing a patient’s endurance
  • Providing an aftercare plan of simple in-home exercises

Typically, during the six subsequent visits, the Physical Therapist assesses the patient’s progress and makes adjustments to the plan of care.   Additionally, the patient’s movement capabilities are videotaped for a Gait Analysis Assessment.  These results may be shared with the patient’s primary care physician or gerontologist.

Following the completion of the program, the patient may choose to continue the aftercare plan at home or in our therapeutic gymnasium under the watchful eye of our Physical Therapists.  The Fall Prevention Program is covered under MediCare and most health insurance plans.

Feb 19, 2010 - Congratulations Dr. Mary Wooten, DPT, OCS!

Dr. Mary M. Wooten was recently awarded recertification as a clinical specialist in orthopedic physical therapy after having been initially credentialed as a clinical specialist in 1999.  All physical therapists in the U.S. must be licensed to practice; however, board certification in a specialty area is an achievement well beyond the required licensure.
Dr. Wooten has been a licensed physical therapist since 1986.  She is one of only five physical therapists in the Fredericksburg area who are
board certified clinical specialists. Four of five area clinical specialists practice at OSPTA.  Dr. Wooten's accomplishment was recently recognized at the Combined Sections Meeting of the American Physical Therapy Association in San Diego, CA.
